MineralBoost Zinc
ACVM registered product for the prevention of facial eczema in cattle.
MineralBoost Zinc has been designed and registered as an Agricultural Compound and Veterinary Medicine (ACVM) for preventing facial eczema in cows.
MineralBoost Zinc is a rumen-dispersible granule containing zinc oxide for the prevention of facial eczema. MineralBoost Zinc has the added benefits of calcium, magnesium and sodium, all key minerals for production, feed efficiency and heat stress commonly seen in dairy cows over the summer months.
The rumen dispersible granule is patented technology designed to exhibit the benefits of a granule during mixing and freight (less dust, less segregation, less waste), while dispersing into ultra-fine powder once inside the rumen, ensuring best mineral uptake. MineralBoost Zinc is a very convenient and cost-effective method of adding zinc to animal feed to prevent facial eczema.
Product make up
Calcium
Calcimate in MineralBoost is manufactured from high-quality New Zealand limestone. The industry’s most stringent manufacturing and testing processes ensure the outcome is a fine, high-calcium supplement you can trust. Calcium maximises milk production post-calving, optimises assimilation, improves reproduction, strengthens the cows’ immune system, counters the stress from cold weather and extreme activity (i.e. mating, calving) and enables younger stock to reach their growth potential.
Magnesium
MineralBoost contains high-quality magnesium sourced from Australia. Magnesium is required for the production of hormones that are important for the absorption of calcium from the gut and the mobilisation of calcium from bones. Magnesium supplementation reduces animal health problems and increases milk production. The magnesium requirement of the modern dairy cow has increased, partly due to increased use of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilisers and also due to an increase in cow genetic merit. All cows are to some extent deficient in magnesium in late pregnancy. Cows cannot access magnesium stored in the body; therefore, it is best to supplement daily.
Sodium
MineralBoost contains quality New Zealand-sourced sodium. Dairy cows routinely expel sodium from the body in urine, faeces, saliva, and milk, so it must be replaced. Sodium is an essential element for animals, and may be one of the most cost-effective methods of increasing milk production. Research has shown that supplementing with sodium can produce a significant response when the dietary level is low. Sodium in some form should be available at all times all year round. Rapidly growing young animals require sodium for new tissue formation, and if sodium is deficient, appetite is suppressed.
Zinc Oxide
Zinc oxide used within MineralBoost Zinc is the most available form of zinc for the dairy cow. Zinc reduces the ability of sporidesmin to form free radicals and cause cell damage within the liver. It is recommended to start at a preventative dose rate 2 to 3 weeks before spore counts are expected to rise, as this is far more effective than crisis dosing after the spore count has risen.

Feed storage on farm
As with any grain or meal feed, products need to be kept dry, as moisture combined with heat can cause fungi to grow. Common on-farm storage methods are: in a shed or unused fertiliser bin; in a covered pit; on a concrete pad; or in a cutting, covered with a plastic sheet and tyres. Most feed should be used reasonably expediently (within 40 - 50 days). The longer you plan to store feed products, the better your storage facilities need to be.
